    A paper waste prediction model

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to develop a model predicting the collected amount of waste paper at the regional level of municipalities. Leaming about the factors that influence the amount of collected paper is a prerequisite for the evaluation and reorganization of collection systems. We hypothesize that the amount of collected paper depends on both, the waste potential and factors which influence the convenience such as the density of collection sites. For this study, we use a sample of 649 municipalities. The data show a high variance in terms of the collected waste paper per person and year between the municipalities. We develop a multivariate regression model providing valuable insights about the relationship between demographic parameters and the amount of collected waste paper. Furthermore, in this novel approach we found a significant positive impact of the convenience of the collection system

Deskription und Bewertung strukturierter Produkte unter besonderer BerĂĽcksichtigung verschiedener Marktszenarien

Due to a fast market development in volume and innovation on the structured products (certificates) side, critics are finding fault regarding a lack in transparency and comparability. However, certificates can provide characteristics for every market scenario as its explicit strength. The aim of the following working paper is to provide transparency and an analysis in the most common certificates. The analysis consists of a description, valuation and scenario analysis which then leads to a substantial overview and should provide knowledge which certificate can be used in specific market scenarios. --Financial engineering, strukturierte Produkte,Zertifikate, evaluation by duplication,Discountzertifikate,Aktienanleihe,Doppel-Aktienanleihe,Cheapest-to-deliver-Zertifikat,Bonus-Zertifikat,Sprint-Zertifikat,Outperformance-Zertifikat,Reverse Sprint-Zertifikat,Reverse Outperformance-Zertifikat

    Organic Farming and Climate Change

    Get PDF
This publication concludes that organic agriculture has much to offer in both mitigation of climate change through its emphasis on closed nutrient cycles and is a particularly resilient and productive system for adaptation strategies. It also raises the issue of whether organic agriculture should be eligible for carbon credits under voluntary carbon offsetting markets and the Clean Development Mechanism

    Training soft skills with software

Most trainings of communicative behavior focus on fostering the observable speech productive behavior (i.e. speaking). The individual cognitive processes underlying speech receptive behavior (hearing and understanding utterances) thus are often neglected. This is due to the fact that speech receptive behavior cannot be accessed in the midst of a conversation and that its training is very time-consuming. Computer-supported learning environments employed as cognitive tools can help to foster speech receptive behavior. This article discusses the fostering of speech receptive behavior and the possibilities of using software for this purpose. The computer-supported learning environment CaiMan© which is based on these ideas is presented. Finally, seven factors of success for the integration of software into the training of soft skills are derived from empirical research.

Lamotrigine in the treatment of schizoaffective disorder

There is accumulating evidence for the efficacy of lamotrigine in the treatment of bipolar disorder, including bipolar depression, both as monotherapy and in combination with sodium valproate. We present the cases of 3 female patients admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder who were treated with lamotrigine. While dosages up to 200 mg/day, resulting in serum concentrations of less than 5 mg/l, were only partially effective, 400 mg/day (with serum concentrations >10 mg/l) led to considerable mood stability, with complete remission from paranoid symptoms. We suggest that lamotrigine might be helpful in the treatment of schizoaffective disorder, probably with serum concentrations of more than 5 mg/l

Female genital disorder as adverse symptom of lamotrigine treatment - A serotoninergic effect?

The new anticonvulsant, lamotrigine, is becoming an important tool in the treatment of bipolar disorder, including bipolar depression. Its efficacy in bipolar depression might be linked to its inhibition of serotonin uptake. We present the case of a female schizoaffective patient successfully treated with 400 mg of lamotrigine developing considerable genital disorder, a side effect well known from the treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). We suggest that female genital disorder induced by high doses of lamotrigine is a serotoninergic side effect

Corporate governance and expected stock returns: evidence from Germany

Recent empirical work shows that a better legal environment leads to lower expected rates of return in an international cross-section of countries. This paper investigates whether differences in firm-specific corporate governance also help to explain expected returns in a cross-section of firms within a single jurisdiction. Constructing a corporate governance rating (CGR) for German firms, we document a positive relationship between the CGR and firm value. In addition, there is strong evidence that expected returns are negatively correlated with the CGR, if dividend yields and price-earnings ratios are used as proxies for the cost of capital. Most results are robust for endogeneity, with causation running from corporate governance practices to firm fundamentals. Finally, an investment strategy that bought high-CGR firms and shorted low-CGR firms would have earned abnormal returns of around 12 percent on an annual basis during the sample period. We rationalize the empirical evidence with lower agency costs and/or the removal of certain governance malfunctions for the high-CGR firms

Environmental taxation and structural change in an open economy: a CGE analysis with imperfect competition and free entry

The economic effects of environmental taxes depend on the market structure. Under imperfect competition with free entry and exit, environmental taxes have an impact on economies of scale by changing the number and size of firms. Whether economies of scale rise or fall in a particular industry depends on induced changes in the price elasticity of demand. Because export demand is more price elastic than domestic demand, the overall price elasticity rises (falls) as the industry gains (loses) in comparative advantage. We use a computable general equilibrium model for Germany to examine the effects of a unilaterally introduced carbon tax under both perfect and imperfect competition. Our key finding is that induced structural change in favor of the less energy intensive, more labor intensive industries is more pronounced under imperfect competition than under perfect competition. At the macroeconomic level, the total costs of environmental regulation under imperfect competition can be higher or lower than those under perfect competition depending on whether aggregate gains or losses in economies of scale across imperfectly competitive sectors prevail. --environmental taxation, imperfect competition, structural change
